Vegetable-Derived Compounds Effective in Treating Aggressive Breast Cancer

Compounds created using cruciferous vegetables have anticancer properties

Vegetables, including broccoli and brussel sprouts, were used to create a new compound that has been found to combat triple-negative breast cancer.

Mandip Sachdeva, PhD, and Chandraiah Godugu, PhD, from Florida A&M University, in collaboration with Stephen Safe, PhD, from Texas A&M University, assessed the activity of novel C-substituted diindolylmethane (C-DIM) derivatives. The researchers demonstrated that the derivatives have anticancer activities.

Sachdeva said, “We are confident that the compounds we are currently working with are an effective treatment for triple-negative breast cancer. These compounds are safer for the patient than current treatments available.”

According to Sachdeva’s study results, these synthetic compounds developed from diindolylmethane (DIM) can be used to treat several types of cancer. C-DIMs are also being examined for their ability to prevent cancer.

The DIM compounds are orally active and could be available to patients in pill form and be safe to take daily. Patients could also decrease the number of cancer treatments needed when taking the DIM compounds in combination with existing anticancer drugs.

This research was presented at the 2012 American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists Annual Meeting and Exposition.
