Genetic study shows chemotherapy treatment has decreased the rate of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) recurrence in children with specific chromosomal defect
In a study involving children diagnosed with ALL who were treated with intense chemotherapy as a result of testing positive for the iAMP21 genetic mutation, Newcastle University scientists, led by professor Christine Harrison and professor Anthony Moorman from the Leukaemia Research Cytogenetics Group, found that the rate of ALL recurrence among study participants decreased by 75%, and the survival rate of 5 years or more increased to almost 90%.
Study findings are published online in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
