Initial PET-CT Scan Beneficial for Patients With Limited-Stage Small-Cell Lung Cancer

TOP - Daily

University of Pennsylvania researchers compare the benefits of PET-CT scans and bone scans with regard to initial assessment of patients with limited-stage small-cell lung cancer (SCLC)

In a study to determine the effects of implementing positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) scans in place of bone scans for pretreatment assessment of patients with limited-stage SCLC, University of Pennsylvania researchers found that tumor staging and intrathoracic disease detection are more precise with PET-CT scans. According to researchers, the enhanced PET-CT assessment results in improved patient outcomes.

The study is published in the Journal of Thoracic Oncology.
