According to Mayo Clinic researchers, inflammatory bowel disease increases a patient’s risk for the skin cancer
In a comprehensive investigation involving decades of published studies, Mayo Clinic researchers have determined that patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at a 37% greater risk for melanoma.
Upon examination of all published IBD studies performed over the previous 7 decades (which included 172,837 patients with IBD), Mayo Clinic researchers discovered 179 cases of melanoma following an IBD diagnosis.
The research was presented at the Digestive Disease Week 2013 conference.
