New Research Finds No Benefit From Metformin in Cancer Patients

TOP - Daily

Metformin may not positively impact breast cancer mortality rates, according to Women’s College Hospital researchers

A novel study by researchers at Women’s College Hospital involving 2361 women who were diagnosed with breast cancer and also prescribed metformin for diabetes showed that the drug may not increase survival rates in older patients with breast cancer and diabetes as previous research suggests.

The study’s lead author, Dr Iliana Lega, a research fellow at Women’s College Research Institute, said, “Although existing scientific literature suggests that [metformin] may prevent new cancers and death from breast cancer, our study found the drug did not significantly impact survival rates in our patients.”

The study is published in the journal Diabetes Care.
