Persistent Heartburn Is a Precursor to Pharynx and Larynx Cancers

Brown University researchers show throat and vocal cords are better protected when heartburn is treated with antacids

In a study involving 468 patients with pharynx cancer and 163 patients with larynx cancer, Scott M. Langevin, PhD, postdoctoral research fellow at Brown University in Providence, RI, and colleagues discovered that persistent heartburn was associated with a 78% greater risk for pharynx and larynx cancers. Study results also revealed that the use of antacids to treat heartburn reduced the risk for pharynx and larynx cancers by 41%. However, prescription heartburn medications and home remedies did not possess the same protective qualities.

The study is published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.
