Researchers Establish Accurate Process for Identifying Breast Cancer

Study demonstrates potential of money-saving procedure

Moving beyond x-ray mammography for breast cancer detection, researchers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge have developed a single-step Raman spectroscopy process.

Study findings show the process classified breast lesions (with or without microcalcifications) into benign, malignant, or normal with 82% accuracy and therefore may eliminate the need for multiple repeat breast biopsies.

The study is published in Cancer Research.
