Today’s pharmacists are challenged with adhering to budgetary limitations and keeping down drug-based therapy costs due to healthcare reform and heightened cost consciousness.

In light of these obstacles, a new publication, The Practical Cancer Pharmacy Workbook, recently published by the Association of Community Cancer Centers (ACCC), is designed to assist hospital cancer program pharmacy and financial teams consider more than just cost when deciding upon drug purchases. A practical approach to pharmacoeconomics in which the association between costs of healthcare interventions and their outcomes is examined in the workbook and its three companion webinars. In general, the goal of the ACCC is to help hospital cancer programs accurately consider the true worth associated with drug-based therapies.

“As hospitals continue to face increasing pressures to provide the highest quality care for the lowest possible cost, understanding the true value of the health services they provide to patients is critical for their continued viability,” said ACCC President Thomas L. Whittaker, MD, FACP. “The Practical Cancer Pharmacy Workbook and webinar series are important tools for making choices among competing anti-cancer drugs.”
