On September 15, 2011, GE and several financial partners announced a healthymagination open innovation challenge to discover ideas and create products that will assist in the fight against cancer, beginning specifically with breast cancer.

Jeff Immelt, CEO and Chairman, GE, said that GE would invest $1 billion over the next 5 years on R&D programs that will improve screening and diagnosis and help doctors ensure patients receive the right therapy for their tumor type. “We envision a day when cancer is no longer a deadly disease,” said Immelt. “When you add our cutting edge cancer detection technologies to the innovative ideas of our new partners, it’s a powerful formula for tackling cancer and helping doctors and researchers improve care.”

Advancements in breast cancer diagnostics will allow healthcare professionals a better understanding of triple negative cancer tumors as well as insight into the molecular similarities between breast cancer and other solid tumors. With extensive knowledge of these tumors, early detection will improve, diagnoses will be more accurate, and treatments will be determined by each patient’s unique cancer.
